Bringing home a puppy with a fully-furnished, low-shedding coat means establishing a grooming rhythm early. Here’s what worked for our families in their first year.
Daily brushing, even just five minutes, prevents the soft puppy coat from matting. We send home a slicker brush and detangling spray with every puppy — start using them on day one so your puppy associates the routine with calm, not stress.
Most Mini Island Doodles puppies are ready for their first professional groom around 4–6 months, depending on coat development. The first appointment is typically a wash, blow-dry, light trim around the eyes and paws, and nail clip — short, low-stress, and confidence-building.
Once the coat changes (around 8–10 months), grooming every 8–10 weeks keeps the coat manageable. A good groomer for a doodle is worth their weight in gold.
